There are Still Some Bras Available

Hello all, I just wanted to give up an update on the project. There are still some Maidenform bra kits available at the following quilt shops:

Sew Many Quilts (Johnson City) has 5-6
Quilters Corner (Ithaca) has only 2 left
O’Susannah’s (Watkins Glen) has 16-17

(Shop address & contact information
in a previous post)

They are running out fast, so hurry if you want to participate in this event! The deadline for entry is August 1st. The embellished bras will then be judged, photographed and prepared for exhibition.

NQA Certified Judge Lorry Chwazik of Norwich, NY has agreed to judge the entries, so thank you Lorry.

We are busy putting together an exhibition schedule. We want the bras to tour all the areas in the Southern New York Region prior to the auction, which is tentatively scheduled for November 6, at the YWCA in Binghamton.

I also found another group in Canada that makes embellished bras for Breast Cancer Awareness. They have models wearing their entries. They can be found in this blog: http://www.mardibras.blogspot.com/

All The Bras are Available – Planning Exhibition Schedule

Today, Cindy and I traveled up to Ithaca to bring a bin of bra kits to Quilter’s Corner. They just moved to their new shop recently, and it’s lovely! Merrie thought it would be nice to display the completed bras at their shop in October during the Greater Ithaca Area Quilt Show, Traditions and Beyond – sponsored by the Tompkins County Quilters’ Guild.

We are currently creating an exhibition schedule for September and October 2009. Binghamton celebrates a First Friday Art Walk every month, and we are looking for venues to display at. There are several events on the calendar, sponsored by the charities and we are planning on being there.

Encore Plus is hosting a Dog Walk at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton and a Pink Tea at the Binghamton YWCA.

The American Cancer Society is hosting the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer at Rec Park in Binghamton and a Harvest Festival in Walton, NY.

Common Threads is hosting the Quilters’ Consortium of New York State meeting in September, and the bras will be on display there.

If you know of an event or would like to host an exhibit, please contact me at ltiemann@stny.rr.com.

Brazieres For A Cure - In The News

Yesterday, the local paper, The Press and Sun Bulletin posted an article about the project. You can see it at: http://pressconnects.com/article/20090318/COLUMNISTS01/903180334/1005/OPINION

This link will probably only work for a week or so.

Artists, quilters to decorate bras for auction

There is a nice picture of Kim 'stuffing the bras' into the kit bags. I didn't see the paper until later in the afternoon, as I was attending the Quilter's Constortium of New York State meeting, that was held in Watkins Glen. The bra kits are now available at O'Susannah's Quilts and Gifts there, plus at Sew Many Quilts in Johnson City. Quilter's Corner in Ithaca will be getting theirs on Friday, March 20, 2009.

Last evening, at the Broome County Quilters Guild meeting, Rick received the bra he is embellishing - the one I will be wearing at an upcoming Common Threads guild meeting. I'm not sure I should be nervous or not, there was a lot of snickering going an at the meeting.

Brazieres For A Cure - Design Guidelines

I spent the day stuffing bra kits with Kim

Today was a very busy day. The morning was spent making copies of the entry forms, fliers, data sheets, etc. for the Brazieres For A Cure bra kits. Bins, pink ribbon fabric and small pink bows were purchased over the past several days. Kim, an employee at Sew Many Quilts volunteered to help out today and get the kits ready. We pinned a small pink bow on each bra, and sorted them out by size – from 32A to 44DD. Each location is getting an assortment of sizes and styles – push up, strapless, sport, padded, support and lacey. The local newspaper, The Press & Sun Bulletin caught wind of what we were up to and sent someone over to take pictures. It might be in tomorrow’s paper (http://www.pressconnects.com/).

Sew Many Quilts has their kits available now. O’Susannah’s will get theirs tomorrow, and Quilter’s Corner will get theirs on Friday. The project is limited to 100 entries and the artists have until August 1st, 2009 to return them. Judging and photographing will be done in August, and the bras will start touring the Southern New York region in September. Dates, times and locations will be posted here and on local community calendars.

The Bras From Maidenform Arrive

On Wednesday, March 11, 2009 the 100 bras Maidenform sent for the Brazieres For A Cure project arrived at Sew Many Quilts in Johnson City, NY. The girls at the shop had a great time checking them out. I was able to get over there the next day and see them for myself. Here is a photo of all the bras in their un-embellished form. There is a gentleman in the Common Threads Quilt Guild whom I challenged to make one - he agreed, but only if I wear it during a meeting. So sometime after August 1st, I’m sure there will be a picture of me wearing it.

The project planning is well underway. We will have kits available next week at three quilt shops in the Southern New York region, encompassing Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins counties.
